1922-1939

Seasons of Change

The roaring twenties brought about significant social and cultural change. It was during this time that Morton’s newly-developed iodized salt became all the rage.

1922

In memory of his father’s good works, Joy Morton dedicates his farm in Lisle, Illinois as the Morton Arboretum. Today it comprises over 1,700 acres of trees and flowers that represent plants from all over the world.

Because goiters were a common condition, Morton develops iodized salt, which addresses the problem. The Food and Drug Administration later stipulates that the salt be labeled with the message, “This salt provides iodide, a necessary nutrient.”

Morton Salt refreshes the look of its brand icon again. As Shirley Temple’s career begins to take off, the Morton Salt Girl takes on the child star’s trademark curly hair.
