How many 40lb. bags will I need?
The number of bags you will need depends on the conditions of your pool and if it is a new or used pool. Below is a guide to help in calculating the required number of bags.
For new pools: Follow builders’ recommendations for pool start-up.
For existing pools: Since prior use of chlorine and other chemicals can result in residual chloride content, you must measure the existing level of salt in your pool and add only the amount necessary to adjust up to the manufacturer’s recommended level. Note that Morton® Advanced Formula Pool Salt is designed to provide 60ppm of stabilizer (sodium cyanurate/cyanuric acid), the level recommended by most chlorine generator manufacturer’s when salt levels are 3,200ppm.
Guide for approximate numbers of 40-lb. bags of Morton® Advanced Formula Pool Salt required to achieve recommended salt/minerals levels

Please conduct regular water tests and use additional additives as required to maintain proper water balance.
Directions for Use
Morton® Advanced Formula Pool Salt is compatible with all pool surfaces. However, please allow new plaster pool surfaces to cure according to dealer instructions before adding this product.
| Step 1: |
Start with a clean pool and an active pool filtration. |
| Step 2: |
Check and adjust water balance (alkalinity, pH and
calcium hardness) to manufacturer recommended levels. |
| Step 3: |
Read entire label before applying product. Use strictly in accordance with hazard statements and directions. This product is intended for systems that require direct application of salt to pool water. Follow your chlorine generator manufacturer’s directions for best method of salt application. One 40-lb. bag added to 10,000 gallons will result in 450ppm of salt and 9ppm of fast-dissolving chlorine stabilizer (cyanuric acid). |
| Step 4: |
Empty 40lb. bags into the deepest areas of the pool with circulation pump operating. Stir, brush or agitate any un-dissolved product until absorbed into pool water. Temporary clouding may occur. |
| Step 5: |
Wait 4 to 5 hours after adding product before swimming in pool. |
Test Kits
It’s important to use a reliable test kit for pool care. A good test kit including test strips will allow you to test for chlorine, pH, acid/base values, alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabilizer in your pool water.
Keeping the above measurements in proper range is not only important for swimming comfort, it’s also essential for keeping your pool’s finish in good condition. Please use the following recommendations while testing the pool water on regular basis.
| • |
Keep chlorine level within the 2.0 to 4.0ppm range |
| • |
Keep pH level between 7.4 to 7.6 |
| • |
Maintain 100ppm alkalinity reading in swimming pool; if both pH and alkalinity need to be adjusted, always balance alkalinity first. |
| • |
Stabilizer helps to retain chlorine longer. Without stabilizer, 90% of generated chlorine can be lost in as little as 2 hours in direct sunlight. Pool chlorinator manufacturer’s generally recommend that your pool contain at least 60ppm of stabilizer to properly keep your desired chlorine level. |
| • |
The right amount of calcium hardness is essential to protect the pool finish. 200 to 400ppm is the normal range while 300ppm is ideal for most pools. |
