Areas of Giving
Morton Salt Company provides support in many key philanthropic areas including Education, Environment, Civic and Community, Health and Human Services and Arts and Culture. To support the company giving mission and values, the Morton Salt Contributions program seeks requests in the following strategic priorities within each philanthropic category:

Education:

  • K-12th grade math education or business courses relating to: entrepreneurship, capitalism and/or marketing
  • Mentoring programs linking education to workplace and career opportunities
  • After school programs for children and teens; programs and activities at times when school is not in session including after-school hours, weekends and/or summer break. Initiatives can span one or more of the giving categories of education, arts and culture, environment, civic and health and human services and include:
    • Youth development such as leadership training
    • Educational enrichment, particularly in the areas of math or business

Environment:

  • After school programs that build environmental awareness
  • Sustainable development programs that educate and promote development that meets the needs of the present society without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Morton Salt seeks proposals within this focus area that will educate and inform youth and their families about:
    • Pollution prevention
    • Environmental conservation
    • Eco-efficiencies

Civic and Community:

  • Regional efforts that build local competitiveness and strengthen the economic and social base
  • Programs that build relationships with key stakeholders in Morton Salt communities
  • Programs that focus on volunteerism

Health and Human Services:

  • Safety Awareness and implementation
  • National programs that can demonstrate that funding will support projects that directly benefit a Morton Salt community
  • Food and nutrition focused programs

Arts and Culture:

  • After school programs

Funding Criteria

The following are the key criteria that Morton salt uses to evaluate potential contributions.

A. Does the request address a critical need in a Morton Salt community?

B. What is the impact on Morton Salt’s key objectives? These include:

1. Future growth (new markets, new technologies)

2. Profitable growth and earnings

3. Employee recruitment, retention and development

4. Sustainable development-operations and products that meet     the needs of the present global community without     compromising the ability of future generations to meet their     needs

C. How can support of the program:

1. Strengthen relations with key stakeholders

2. Create a clear niche for Morton Salt

3. Improve the company’s image, reputation and visibility in the     communities where it operates

D. Are Morton Salt employees interested in the proposed program?

E. Does the program impact Morton Salt priorities in more than one of the     Company’s key areas of funding which are education, environment, civic     and community, health and human services, arts and culture?

F. Does the program or organization have broad based community support?

G. Does the program/organization have a diversity of other funders
    (i.e. corporate, foundation and individuals)

Program Exclusions (list may not be comprehensive)

As a matter of policy, the Company does not provide support for the following:

  • Organizations that do not have their IRS 501 © (3) non-profit tax exempt status
  • Multiple grants in a single year: The Company does not provide more than one grant per year to an organization.
  • United Way funded agencies: As a leader in support of the United Way in each of its communities, Morton salt generally does not provide additional funding to organizations receiving annual support from the United Way.
  • Capital Campaigns: In general, support is not directed toward capital campaigns. Exceptions may be made when an organization’s core program is dependent on new or renovated facilities, when the capital project helps the organization increase its earned income, and/or when the project has significant impact on Morton Salt employees and their families as well as the general community.
  • National organizations including national health funds. (Except programs that are taking place in and directly serving a Morton Salt community.)
  • Contributions will not be made indefinitely. Even in those instances where multi-year pledges are made, the company retains the right to terminate support, if appropriate.
  • Contributions will not be made as a result of telephone solicitations.
  • Fundraising events (one-time short term events such as walk-a-thons or dinners)
  • Religious organizations ( except programs used by the entire community on a nonsectarian basis).
  • Veterans organizations
  • Labor organizations
  • Fraternal organizations
  • Sports federations
  • Entertainment groups
  • Organizations requesting good will advertising
  • Endowment funds
  • Individuals
  • Political parties or candidates for public office
  • Scholarship support other than Morton Salt sponsored scholarships

Application Procedure
Non profits providing services in the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area (including the city of Chicago) are eligible to apply to the Company Giving program and are expected to utilize the online application form.

Application Deadlines
Applications are accepted and evaluated year-round.

Non profit organizations requesting funding for programming in the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area are expected to apply online utilizing the internet based application. Nonprofit organizations will need to provide their IRS tax exempt number to gain access to the full on-line application form.

On-Line Application
On-line applications will receive careful consideration by the Community Affairs Department in Chicago. If your application is complete and no additional information is requested, a decision regarding your request will generally be made within six – to – eight – weeks of your submission.

On-line applications will only be transmitted once you have submitted a completed form. Non profits may set up an account on-line to save your incomplete application for future completion and submittal. Applicants will receive confirmation of their transmittal by e-mail.
