Morton Salt Launches Online Design Competition to Showcase the Art of Salt

August 6, 2014

Brand Challenges Artists to Create Unique Designs for its Iconic Blue Package of Table Salt; Morton Salt to Donate $100,000 in Scholarships to Support the Arts in Recognition of Morton Salt Girl’s 100th Birthday.

Morton Salt has been helping America create delicious dishes in the kitchen for generations – and now, in honor of the Morton Salt Girl’s 100th Birthday this year, the company is calling on artistic consumers to create unique designs for the label on its iconic blue table salt package.

Through Sept. 7, 2014, eligible consumers can create and enter their own designs into “The Art of Salt: Morton Salt Label Design Contest.” Morton Salt is giving contest entrants a label template with the official Morton Salt logo so they can develop their unique design creations around it. The official rules, label template, design tools and prize details for the 6-week online competition are located at www.MortonArtofSalt.com.*

“The Morton Salt Girl made her debut on our blue package of table salt 100 years ago,” said Shayn Wallace, Vice President of Morton Salt’s Consumer and Industrial businesses. “In honor of her centennial, we wanted to give America an opportunity to reimagine the label that she has graced all these years.”

He added: “We’re essentially giving consumers a blank canvas to express themselves on our label. Whether they are professional or novice artists, we encourage them to enter the contest and show off their design chops.”

The grand prize winner will receive two permanent pass tickets to attend Art Basel – one of the world’s premier international art shows for modern and contemporary works – taking place Dec. 4-7, 2014 in Miami Beach, Fla. A $1,500 cash prize will also be awarded to the grand prize winner, along with a Morton Salt Prize Pack (see the official contest rules for prize details). Morton Salt will also award prizes to three runner-up winners.

Select designs will be unveiled and digitally showcased on the Magnificent Mile in Morton Salt’s headquarters city of Chicago this fall. This celebration will enable thousands of Chicagoans and tourists to join the festivities, which will include giveaways, games, music and live cooking demonstrations.

Supporting the Arts

To show its support of the arts, Morton Salt is also donating $100,000 in scholarships to students “worth their salt.” The company is sponsoring one hundred Morton Salt Girl Centennial Scholarships that will be awarded to select fine arts and culinary arts students enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and in Kendall College’s School of Culinary Arts, respectively.

“An education in the arts helps students reach their creative potential and inspires them to see the world in new and unexpected ways, enriching our communities and neighborhoods everyday,” said Walter Massey, President of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. “We are proud to work with an iconic brand like Morton Salt to support the development of young artists and designers in Chicago.”

Recipients of the Morton Salt Girl Centennial Scholarships will be selected by the schools based on academic performance, financial need and other criteria.

“Kendall College and the Kendall College Trust are thrilled to be part of the Morton Salt Girl’s 100th Birthday celebration this year,” says Kendall College President Emily Williams Knight. “We offer a top-rated learning environment for budding chefs and we’re excited to partner with Morton Salt to provide students with this unique opportunity to study culinary arts. This partnership is a worthy investment that will have a positive effect on the culinary world overall.”
